How Data Recovery Brings Back Deleted Files

Data recovery software has become a popular solution for accidentally deleted files and items lost due to crashes or system error. However, many people are not familiar with these programs and unsure how they work. In this article, you will know how your computer stores information so you will understand why the lost data can be got back.

In our daily life, many people don't know that the deleted files can be recovered, they think that the deleted files are not exist. In fact, the files are still in the hard disk, and you can get them back as long as you know the theory of data recovery. With the help of data recovery software, you can get back your lost data in just a few steps.

In order to understand how data recovery works, you first need to know how your computer stores information. Every bit of information on your PC, from saved files to your operating system itself, is recorded on your hard drive. The hard drive is essentially the memory of your computer.

Inside the hard drive are a few complex devices, primarily being the platters and the read/write heads. Platters are rapidly spinning disks, and there can be a few of these. They are similar to CDs in their general design. Platters store data though magnetic regions, which make up the binary code of information. With binary information, the magnetic fields can have two position only: 1 or 0. One of these positions is called a bit. Eight bits composes a byte, as in megabyte. Thousands of the magnetic regions record your information on the platters.

This magnetic information is detected and recorded by the read/write head. This is a finely tuned device which hovers just above the surface of the platter. It picks up the magnetic field, and sends the signal through the computer. The binary code is then converted into the file that you see as a picture, hear as a song, or interact with as a program. The same happens in reverse when you save a file - the information goes through your computer, is translated to binary code, and is recorded in magnetic regions on the platter by the read/write head.

Besides hardware malfunction, most data loss is causes by software malfunctions or mistakes, such as accidentally erasing a file, emptying a recycle bin, formatting a disk, and so on. Virus and system crashes can also cause data to be erased. In these circumstances, the binary magnetic information that makes up a file is not lost. Instead, just the icons, references, and file names are removed. As a result, the user is unable to access their file, but the data remains on the platters. This is due in part to the design and function of a hard drive - when a file is deleted, the information remains on the hard drive until new information takes its place. When new information is saved over top of old, this is known as overwriting.

A data recovery program  makes the read/write head detect all information on the platters, even where the computer seems to show that there is no information. This allows the program to pick up on the magnetic regions of deleted information. This information is then analysed, the file type is determined, and the file is reconstituted on the computer. The user can then interact with the file just as before.

Use Data Recovery Software Appropriately

Why and How to Use Data Recovery?

Have you ever had someone get on your computer and start pushing keys on your keyboard, causing your computer to freeze up or shut down? Sometimes friends of your offspring do this while you are away at work, or out on the patio having a beer. Occasionally files are deliberately deleted by a vindictive spouse, or significant other, or by an over competitive co-worker. And there is always encroachment upon your system by Trojan Horses, and other “Malware”. You may also own computers that are used by employees, and occasionally abused by them.

If your computer gets to the point where your hard drive needs to be formatted, and the operating system needs to be replaced, or if you need to get deleted files back where they belong, or document unauthorized or illegal usage of a hard drive, there is a way to recover the data that would ordinarily be lost in such situations.

cannot put recovered data back in the same partition
When your operating system is still functional, you can recover files from the same partition that you are running Windows on, or from other partitions, with certain data recovery software. When you are doing any type of recovery, you must remember that you cannot put recovered data of any kind back in the same partition that it has been recovered from. When you are performing any kind of data recovery, especially non-specific recovery, you must also remember to have an active virus program running to catch viruses that you may undelete.

You can use Data Recovery software to recover data from a drive with a corrupted operating system by using another operating system with the software on another drive or partition. If the data is on your primary partition, you have to have another operating system configured as the master or “boot” drive with the recovery software, and the one you want to recover data from configured as a slave, or non-boot drive. Then you can just go into the drive you are having problems with, and recover all of the data to another place, or find specific items that you need, and put them where they can be found, and then reinstall them where they belong later.

Data recovery software will not repair a corrupted or non-functional operating system, but you can retrieve any important data that you need when you are restoring that operating system, including any saved pictures or work on the corrupt drive.

no guarantee that files can be recovered
Undelete software understands the internal workings of the system used to store files on a disk (the file system) and uses this knowledge to locate the disk space that was occupied by a deleted file. Because another file may have used some or all of this disk space, there is no guarantee that a deleted file can be recovered. But if the space hasn't been re-used right away, there is a very good chance that you will succeed. People who use data recovery software are often amazed to find that it recovers files that were deleted months or even years ago. The best undelete programs give you an indication of the chances of recovering a file intact and even provide file viewers so you can check the contents before recovery.

Basic knowledge of Data Recovery

Ever wonder how computer data is recovered? What happens to a file when it gets deleted from the recycle bin? How data recovery programs work? How does computer data recovery take place? This article will tell you what happens when a data file is deleted, how the deleted files can be recovered, after you read this article, you will know the possibility of data recovery, unveil the magic of data recovery.

To understand how computer data recovery happens we must first understand what happens when a data file is deleted. Does a file get completely wiped out of the PC once it’s deleted? The answer is – no. First of all a file once deleted just changes addresses and goes in to the recycle bin. The real deletion takes place when it’s deleted from the recycle bin as well. Then the question arises – what happens to the file? Well. The file is right there inside the PC, hiding in the hard disk.

The illusion within the virtual world gives us a false picture of how files are actually stored in the disks. The partitions and the drives that we see on our Windows are not arranged that way in reality. The disk stores files in clusters unlike the way it’s displayed on the monitor.

The Operating System knows what file is stored where. When a file is deleted, the Operating System, like a robot, just removes the file from its list without actually removing it from the hard disk. FAT (File Allocation Table) and MFT (Master File Table) are like contents in a book, which actually maintain the real table of all files stored on the hard disk. So, even if a file is removed from the Operating System its still there on the hard disk and can be searched by looking up at FAT or MFT.

Based on the above theory, some data recovery programs are designed to recover lost data which is due to various reasons.. Computer data recovery involves a few simple steps to recover data. The first step is to determine what type of recovery is required. Accordingly, suitable data recovery program software is installed or run. The search can be confined to a folder or drive. The entire disk can also be scanned. The file type has to be selected to make the search more efficient and quicker. Once these details are fed to the data recovery program it’s only a matter of time that the target, the lost data, pops up along with other lost data. From a list of such files one has to select the target file for which the search was intended and recover it.

The only care that one has to take when data is lost is to avoid adding a new data file to the hard disk. This might really erase the data by over writing it.
